Amber's days of being here were nearing an end, so we asked her what was one last thing that she wanted to do. She couldn't figure it out right away, but then said, "if I don't go into the mountains, I think I'll regret it."
You say "mountains" and I'm all in!! Let's go!!
The next morning, we got up, loaded up the car, and headed towards Rocky Mountains National Park!
Once we get into the mountains, we always tell the kids to get off their iPads and look around at the scenery and of course look for animals.
We were all busy looking up towards the tops of the mountains when we hear from the back of the car, McKaila say, "I think I see some pronghorn on the side of the hill." We all look to the side of the hill and it's not pronghorn, it's a bunch of big horn sheep! We have only seen 1 since moving here, so I got super excited and had Courtney turn around and go back.
Unfortunately, the big horn sheep were still pretty far away from us, so even with my camera you couldn't see them all that well, but it was still very cool to see that many in one area!!
Once arriving at the park, we were all itching to have some lunch. So, we decided to fill our bellies before we started our exploring adventures. I got to say, we have gotten pretty dang good at packing lunches and being prepared to eat in the car, especially since COVID hit.
The kids enjoyed lunchables while the adults enjoyed taco salad.
Now that our bellies were full, it was off to explore. When we go to the mountains, we never know exactly what and where we are going, we just go and see where it takes us. And I got to say, this may have been one of my favorite trips up to the mountains.
It sure was cold, but no one complained one bit, the kids were too busy having fun on the ice and finding whatever snow they could to make snow balls.
We even got to explore some areas that we didn't even know about. We had always seen signs to this area, but never drove back there, so this time, why not?!? We stumbled upon a campground. There was no camping at the moment because, well.... winter, so we got to drive through, found a campsite, parked and decided to get out and explore the area. So happy we did!! We came across a handful of deer, that just grazed in front of us, but never ran away, but we also came across the area that was on fire all summer.
Our last stop of the day was an area that Courtney and I have always talked about going, but we never knew where it was, but finally we found it!!
I'm so excited that we did because I think this is my new favorite spot to go in the Rockies!!
BEAR LAKE!
I honestly didn't even know what to expect because when I read about it online, I read that it's always super busy. It was busy alright, but not to the point that I wouldn't get out of the car and go out to the lake. We got out to the lake and found that the whole lake was frozen solid and that most of the people at the lake were on the ice, taking in the views.
It was getting colder by the minute because the sun was starting to set, but we needed to take advantage of the little sun light that we had left.
The kids had a blast skating around on the ice and getting pulled around by Auntie! And even after we left and a couple days after, the kids constantly talked about how much fun they had on the ice at Bear Lake!
It may have been cold, but no one ever complained about how cold it was. We were just enjoying every little minute we had up in the mountains, that we never cared about how cold it truly was.
Thanks Auntie for always being up for an adventure with us. I'm so happy that we got to enjoy all this together before you had to leave us to go back to Richmond.
