When we booked the cabin, Courtney and I talked about just relaxing in the cabin and not really worrying about going into the mountains since it would be so cold. Once we were in Estes, we talked about it again and discussed that we would probably regret it if we didn’t at least drive around.
We were no hurry that morning to get going, but after filling up our bellies with breakfast and drinking a couple cups of coffee, we loaded up the truck with all our warm stuff and headed into the park.
It was cold, but there is an area that I like to walk around, that isn’t much of a hike when it’s cold. Alluvial Fan Waterfall, here we come!!
It sure was a chilly one, but the kids were having so much running around in the snow and climbing on rocks and downed trees!!
The water was frozen over in most areas, but there were areas where you could see little bits of water. Still being able to hear the water rushing down the falls, even when it’s covered in ice and snow is very peaceful.
As we were walking away from the falls, someone from up top yelled down to us, yelling, “there are 2 moose across the way!!”
We continued down our path, but a little quicker now that we know there were moose and headed across the road to the area where the moose were spotted.
Unfortunately, the moose were still pretty far away, so we couldn’t see them all that well and we could only spot 1 of them once we got over there, but seeing a moose is and always will be an incredible sight.
To end our adventure in the mountains, we took the kids sledding. They have gone sledding once before, but it was here on base and it wasn’t too much of a hill to go sledding on, so the kids were very excited!
Courtney went up and down the hill with the kids while I waited down the hill for them. Logan was the first to go and he had the biggest smile on his face. I was pretty shocked that he wanted to go alone, but he was all for it. I was also very surprised to see how much fun McKaila had. She is one that usually doesn’t like the snow and doesn’t want to do things like this, but she had a blast. The one child I thought would be the first down the hill all by herself would have been, McKenna. She wanted to daddy to go down with her every single time. Even with daddy on the sled with her, she had a huge smile on her face.
Now that all of our cheeks are all rosy from the cold, it’s time to head back to the cabin, get our warm pjs on, sit by the fire, and make some lunch, in the fire!!
We may have not had the intentions of going into the park when we decided to go for the weekend, but I am so glad we did! It was one for the memory books, for sure!!
